Camperdown is an attractive town, 200km west of Melbourne, via the Princes Highway. Volcanic activity some 22,000 years ago formed the lakes, craters, and hills that characterise the landscape of the district. There are about 3500 people living within the township, and about another 4500 people living in the surrounding district.

Sheep, beef, dairy and crop farming are the primary industries. Dairy processing, tourism, light engineering, healthcare and service industries are the other major sources of employment. |

The commercial centre of Camperdown is distinguished by a 2 kilometre long row of elm trees along the main thoroughfare of Manifold Street which is flanked on either side by shops and historic buildings.
Camperdown is reknowned for the 30 metre tall Gothic-style clock tower donated by the late Sir Chester Manifold. Building of this lasting monument was completed in 1897. Other significant buildings in the town centre include the post office (1863), court house (1886), historic museum (1896) and several hotels. |

Camperdown sits at the foot of Mount Leura which together with nearby Mount Sugarloaf are part of a large extinct volcanic complex. There are stunning views of the surrounding volcanic peaks, plains and lakes, from the top of Mount Leura. To the immediate west are the deep volcanic crater lakes Bullen-Merri and Gnotuk while to the east is the crater Lake Purrumbete popular for its Trout and Chinook Salmon fishing.
The town has a large arrange of sporting clubs
It is the starting point of the Crater to Coast Rail Trail which, when completed, will reach Port Campbell. It currently terminates in Timboon.
Camperdown is 50km from the Great Ocean Road at Port Campbell, and 70km from the regional city of Warrnambool.

A return train service runs three times daily between Melbourne and Warrnambool, via Camperdown. It is possible to depart Camperdown at 6.33am, arrive in Melbourne at 9.05am, depart Melbourne at 6.28pm, and return to Camperdown at 9.06pm. |
