timber, which is the largest employer of the region. The city is on the shore of Lake Colac, one of more than 50 freshwater and saltwater lakes in the area, and is popular for water sports.
In the Summer of 2008-2009, Lake Colac completely dried up. Due to high rainfall in August and September 2009, the lake is somewhat restored to its former condition.
The Colac Botanic Gardens are perched on an elevated 12 hectare allotment above the lake and were established in 1910. The gardens contain many historical trees, shady picnic areas, a playground and cafe. From the gardens, scenic views across Lake Colac can be enjoyed. |

While historically the region supported numerous successful brickworks, nowadays the major primary industries are agriculture such as the dairying, beef, lamb and finewool merino industries.
The Colac Kana Festival is held annually in March, the Agricultural Show in November and a six-day marathon footrace in November.

Colac is situated 150km southwest of Melbourne on the Princes Highway and had a population of approximately 10241. At the eastern edge of the world's third largest volcanic plain, surrounded by a landscape of lakes and volcanic craters, this Western District city is the centre of one of Australia's richest farming areas.
