Hamilton is the administrative, retail and service centre for the region, with an attractive tree-lined central shopping precinct, historic buildings, and plenty of off-street parking.

At 187 metres above sea level and 80 kilometres from the coast, Hamilton has a climate of mild winters and warm summers.

Set in 4 acres (1.6 ha), the Botanic Gardens are distinguished by rare botanic species, a superbly restored rotunda, a small zoo featuring rabbits, cockatiels and budgies and playground and the ornate Thomson Fountain.

Hamilton is situated in the Western District of Victoria, 300 kilometres west of Melbourne. The city offers fine sporting and cultural facilities, excellent schools, both private and public and is within easy reach of the Grampians National Park and the coast.

From the early slab hut settlement of the late 1830s on the banks of the Grange Burn, to the bustling city of today, Hamilton's fascinating history reflects the past and present importance of the land, and the premier industry: sheep and wool production.

Today, 10% of the world's apparel wool is produced within a 200 kilometre radius of Hamilton.

In August each year Sheepvention, a wool-related trade-show and exhibition, is held and attracts up to 20,000 visitors.

The Big Wool Bales is an attraction consisting of five linked structures designed to resemble five gigantic woolbales - a tribute to the importance of the local wool industry. Together they form a building and a cafe containing wool-related displays such as historical memorabilia, including farming and shearing equipment, wool scales, old horse harnesses, wool presses and weaving looms, along with wool samples and rural clothing.

The Sir Reginald Ansett Transport Museum celebrates the founding of Ansett Australia in Hamilton in 1935 and displays items from the early days of the Ansett Airlines' operation.

Only 19 kilometres west of Hamilton is the spectacular Wannon Falls. It features a 30 metre vertical precipice of hardened basalt lava over which water cascades into a deep plunge pool below.

Nigretta Falls is a small waterfall with excellent viewing areas set in outstanding scenery 16 kilometres from Hamilton. Water pools provide excellent secluded swimming and fishing spots.
