Penshurst is well located between two of Victoria's major tourist destinations - the Great Ocean Road and the Grampians.  The town is 70km north of Warrnambool and the Great Ocean Road, 30km south of the Grampians and 272km south-west of Melbourne on the Hamilton Highway.

Penshurst is nestled at the foot of Mount Rouse, an imposing dormant volcano, which stands 360 m above sea level.

Mount Rouse was first sighted by the explorer Major Mitchell in 1837 and the town is today situated ideally in the middle of a volcanic trail.

Penshurst retains many historical bluestone and timber buildings, including residences, churches and schools. In addition, it once boasted six hotels, only one of which remains today. Although its population, civil and commercial facilities are somewhat in decline, the town still boasts a hospital with extensive aged care facilities, two primary schools, computer centre, hall, hotel, restaurant, accommodation and a variety of rural and domestic trades and services.

Leisure time activities include golf, swimming, camping, walking, children's' playground, bowls, netball, cricket and football.

The Penshurst Botanic Gardens, developed around a 'never failing spring', are a natural wetland area. A series of narrow gateways cascade into a larger lake where a gazebo nestles on the edge of the water, providing breathtaking views of the Grampians and beyond. The gardens boast a large collection of Australian, American, European and Asian plantings.
