Timboon is just inland (17kms or a pleasant 10 minute drive) off the Great Ocean Road. It is the major retail and service centre for the Port Campbell National Park and surrounding dairying district.

The delightful town is nestled in the hills of the Curdies River valley and the town has banks, chemist, a Public hospital with acute care, 24 hour emergency service and a group of caring Doctors; and all the other shops we would expect in a good shopping centre including some lovely craft shops. The 5 churches represent the major denominations.

Although the railway station has been closed for many years, it was renovated and reopened in mid-2008 as the town's only restaurant besides the local pub.

The Timboon Railway Shed Distillery is situated in a renovated railway goods shed, dating from circa 1910, and now offers visitors the unique experience of seeing and learning a bit about whisky distilling.

The station also marks the beginning of the Timboon rail-trail, past the trestle bridge which runs over the lime works.

Timboon Fine Ice-Cream is popular around tourist areas in the south west, such as Port Campbell and Peterborough. It is hand made near the town itself at a local factory.

Timboon Farmhouse Cheese, a locally established family business was closed early in 2009, following its acquisition by a multi-national corporation. It has recently re-opened and is developing a new range of specialist cheese products.

Timboon is a small town located 152 km southwest of Geelong, 235 km from Melbourne and 27 km south of Cobden. It is a typical rural centre characterised by being located in a rich dairy area where the production of milk, cheese and butter is still central to the local economy.

The other major industries in the area are timber cutting and lime production. There are still substantial quarrying and lime kilns in the district which provide work for the local community.

The town also has a separate hall for the local cub scouts, scouts and venturers.

Children from the district attend Timboon P-12 School, previously known as Timboon Consolidated School.
