The Aged Care Access Initiative commenced 1 July 2008 and its aim is to improve access to primary care for residents of aged care facilities.
A gap analysis to ascertain the allied health needs within Residential Aged Care Facilities (RACFs) in the Otway Division was completed prior to the commencement of the program. Sixty-eight percent RACFs expressed a need for Dietetic services which would include advice, resident assessments, and education for staff and residents. The Otway Division of General Practice now employs two dietitians and one diabetes educator to provide clinical services to residents of aged care facilities either on an individual or group basis (where these services are not currently covered by Medicare or other Government funding arrangements).
