Welcome to the Great South Coast Medicare Local web page.

This web page is intended  to assist Division members, stakeholders, other service providers and
members of the community, to stay informed of our progress on the journey towards establishing the Great South Coast Medicare Local which will be  based on the five Local Government Areas in South West Region of Victoria, ie Warrnambool, Southern Grampians, Glenelg, Moyne and Corangamite.

The shared vision for the Great South Coast Medicare Local is:

“to improve the health and well being of our communities by facilitating a responsive,
seamless and accessible primary health care system”

Our Progress

What is a Medicare Local?

GREAT SOUTH COAST MEDICARE LOCAL TO BE ESTABLISHED

A new Federally funded organisation will be established in our region.  The Great South Coast Medicare Local will improve information about local health care systems, better coordinate primary health care services and find solutions to health care gaps in the region. The approval from the Federal Government to establish the new organisation by 1st July 2012, has been described as a great win for local health care.

A consortium of the Otway Division of General Practice, Southern Grampians Glenelg Primary Care Partnership and the South West Primary Care Partnership developed the successful submission to gain Federal funding for the new organisation.

The consortium has welcomed the approval, saying the new Medicare Local will bring together existing stakeholders and benefit everybody in the region.

The Great South Coast Medicare Local will cover the local government areas of Corangamite, Glenelg, Moyne and Southern Grampians Shires and Warrnambool City Council.

“The Great South Coast Medicare Local will be a new enterprise, bringing increased Federal funding into our region to better coordinate our primary health services. This is a major win for healthcare at a local level and ultimately, for members of our community” said Adele Kenneally, Southern Grampians Glenelg Primary Care Partnership Chair.

“Many of the Medicare Locals across Australia are much larger. We are fortunate in the Great South Coast region to have a Medicare Local that can understand and support our community,” she said.

The Great South Coast Medicare Local will work with the community to provide more information about the local health system, so community members can make informed decisions about their healthcare options.  It will find innovative solutions to fill gaps in health care provision.

Helen Durant, South West Primary Care Partnership Chair, said, “We have worked hard in our region to ensure that the Great South Coast Medicare Local is not a duplicate of existing services, but instead it is an ideal partnership model, streamlining services for the benefit of our community members.”

The announcement is the culmination of many hours of discussions and planning by local services that are committed to working together for the health of the community. A key strength is the capacity and knowledge of the organisations partners’ who have already worked together for more than a decade.

Dr. Craig de Kievit, Chair of the Otway Division of General Practice, said, “Our Medicare Local will continue to build on the work of the Division in supporting general practice to meet the needs of our patients.”

The Great South Coast Medicare Local will start on July 1, 2012 and will soon be seeking nominations for vital roles on the inaugural skills-based board.

Once the board is confirmed, suitable candidates will be sought for the role of CEO and a new permanent home determined for the new entity.
