Quality Use of Medicines

The National Prescribing Service (NPS) provides independent, balanced, evidence-based information about medicines to general practice through the Quality Use of Medicines Program conducted by two visiting facilitators from the National Prescribing Service, Mary Collins and Patricia Derrick.

NPS educational visits are available to all GPs. Two visiting topics are available each year and they are provided by experienced facilitators in the GPs practice at a time which is arranged to suit. Each visit lasts between 30-60 minutes depending on whether an individual or group session has been booked. Practices do not need to be accredited to participate, however if they are, this program can be counted towards attaining the Quality Prescribing Initiative (QPI) Practice Incentives Payment (PIP) of $1 per Standardised Whole Patient Equivalent (SWPE). This is normally about $1000 per full time GP. GPs who are involved will qualify for CPD points and some activities may be used for practices as a part of their accreditation.
